Decorated Christmas Tree

The Bite Before Christmas

By: Katie Backa

‘Twas the day before Christmas, and all on the lake,
Not a bass boat was stirring or causing a wake…
The baitcasters were stowed on the kayak with care,
In hopes that a lunker soon would be there…

The lures were tied on, all snug on their lines,
While visions of largemouths swam through my mind…
And me on my Predator, and him on his yak,
Had just settled in for the plan of attack…

When out in the cove there arose such a splash,
I sprang to my feet to catch sight of the crash…
Away to the timber I flew like a flash,
Tore open the bait box and threw out a slash…

The sun on the surface of a clear-water lake,
Shown down far enough to light up my bait…
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear?
But a huge school of baitfish, 8 bucks in the rear…

With one big old girl, so lovely and quick,
I knew in that moment which one I would stick
More rapid than shad, her coursers they came,
Then she darted and flip-turned, and put them to shame…

Now jerkbait! Now crankbait! Now spinner and jig!
On flouro! On mono! On copoly and braid!
To the top of the water, to the start of the fall,
Now cast away! Cast away! Cast away all!

As dry lines that backlash, when wild winds blow,
When jigs meet an obstacle, just go with the flow…
So up to the coves and creek channels we flew,
With yaks full of tackle, and fishing rods too…

And then in the distance, I saw water boil,
The swirling and churning of minnows in toil…
As I drew in my line, and was turning around,
Down flew an osprey with its one target found…

He was coming in fast, with no sign of slowing,
And right at that moment, my rod started bowing…
A wriggling fish he plucked from the top,
And as I reeled up, my line grew more taught…

It darted – first left – then pulled to the right,
I cranked down the drag – preparing to fight…
It jerked, and it bucked; diving down deeper,
When my drag started squealing – I knew I had a keeper…

I finally gained traction, reeling her in,
The last leg of the race, about to begin…
As I got her up high, I finally could see,
Just how big a lunker she turned out to be!

She was chubby and plump, a right angry old bass…
And I tensed when I saw her – I had to move fast…
A flick of my wrist and a twist of her head,
I reached down and grabbed her – she was clearly well-fed…

With thumb clamped down tight,
My heart quickly dropped,
Realizing all but one hook
On my treble had popped…

I unhooked her gently,
And measured her in…
Then lifted her high;
Let the picture-taking begin!

After all angles were taken,
I gave one last stare…
Then laid her back in the water,
For a breath of fresh air…

I took a minute to thank her for such a great fight,
She only took but a moment to spring back to life…
But I heard her exclaim as she swam out of sight…
HAPPY FISHMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!
